That noise
I once had an old microwave that would make a buzzing sound when I opened the door and the turntable would start to spin. It was a glitch I ignored because the microwave still worked and I didn’t want to bother with it.
Then, inevitably, it stopped working. So, I had to get a new one.
When I installed the new microwave and opened the door the turntable didn’t move and the microwave stayed quiet. It felt strange. I was used to the noise, I was to the movement. It felt strange. Until I realized (or rather remembered) this was how a properly working microwave should function. It wasn’t supposed to move and make sounds.
Too often we get used to what’s broken: Whether it’s an appliance, a relationship, a routine, a habit.
It can feel strange to move on, to adjust to how something is meant to be or could be, instead of accepting what we’re used to.
But in the end, it’s worth making a change before what’s broken becomes normal.
Because broken things may feel familiar but they rarely get better.
